BUDAPEST, CASTLE DISTRICT, BUDAVÁR-KAPUHÁZ COMPETITION 2004
From the final report of the competition:
… the theoretical dissection of the relation between the fragment and the whole - an interesting and valuable thought, unfortunately the questions remain unanswered and the architectural responses are not always consistent…
… a good suggestion, that the façade overlooking Dísz tér doesn’t want to imitate a palace, instead it wants to lead to a halt and serve as an orientation point…this is why the block above the main gate is discontinued (as there is no such palace), and to ensure a longer view towards the Castle’s dome from Dísz tér…
…the significant withdrawal of the southern installation line and the open, gate-like façade overlooking Szent György tér are favorable and positively appreciated solutions, as well as the ideal positioning and favorable scale of the interior courtyard, “overflowing” to the square…

The area located between Dísz tér and Szent György tér - where the Palotanegyed (Palace District) adjoins the Polgárváros (Citizen's District) - is an extraordinary venue of the Budai Váregyed (Buda Castle District). During the last 25 years, four architectural competitions (1994, 2004, 2005, and 2017) have been announced for the reconstruction of the ruined area, which still shows the devastation of World War II. Our studio won the competitions in 1994 and 2005; in the other two years (1994, 2005), when the Commission didn’t announce a winner, our submission was among the prize winners. The plan presented here shows our winning concept from 2005, the model was prepared for the 2004 submission, awarded with a prize.
