BADACSONY, VILLA RANOLDER RECONSTRUCTION
2017
The Villa Ranolder (owned by a private
client) stands on the southern slope of Badacsony, in the area of the
Balaton-felvidéki (Balaton Uplands) National Park, surrounded by picturesque
landscape. The site offers a wide panorama of the vineyards at the foot of the
mountain, and the open water and coastal bays of Lake Balaton. The site is
surrounded by vineyards and bordered by a basalt stone road on the south. The
unique and characteristic basalt-pillars and palisades of Badacsony rise just a
few hundred meters north. The two-story building was erected in the 1860s at
the commission of János Ranolder, Bishop of Veszprém. The design shows a clear
concept with a simple, yet practical layout and interior. Based on the
available data, the villa was probably constructed in two main periods. The
building is currently listed as a heritage asset. Our task was to reconstruct
the Villa Ranolder in accordance with modern standards and expectations while
keeping the architectural values of the original villa. The renovation and
reconstruction left the outline, the façade, and the bulk of the building
essentially unmodified; the ornate canopy-roof above the upper balcony -
probably destructed in a minor reconstruction in the 20th century - was
restored to its original state. The harmony between the villa and the natural
and constructed elements of the landscape and environment remained untouched.
