Csobánc, Villa Tolnay Winery 2009

CSOBÁNC, VILLA TOLNAY WINERY PRELIMINARY DESIGN 2009
The site is located in the Balaton-felvidéki (Balaton Uplands) National Park, on one of the most beautiful parts of the southern slope of Csobánc-hegy (Csobánc Mountain); with the characteristic “witness mountains” of Badacsony overlooking the landscape. The villa standing on the site is a typical representation of the past century’s lakeshore buildings around Balaton; its peculiarity is that during World War II Klári Tolnay, Kossuth Prize-winning Hungarian actress, has also lived here for a while.
Our task was to prepare the architectural design for the hand-crafted winery of Villa Tolnay Borház Kft. According to our concept, the technological processes of the winery will be accommodated in a new building; while the renovated, modernized villa will be occupied by hospitality functions (wine tasting and dining room) with additional spaces.
During the renovation of the villa, the architectural values of the former design were preserved; and the positioning and shaping of the new building was strongly influenced by the relation of the old house to the landscape. The press-house-like shape and dimensions of the simple, elegant buildings characteristic of the neighborhood appear on the aboveground sections of the new building. The large processing halls and rooms of the plant will be constructed belowground, according to the relief of the hillside. The existing cellar will continue to function as a barrel maturation room of the plant.
