BALATONFÜRED, BARN AT THE HILLSIDE 2016
The site, located on the slopes of Tamás-hegy (Tamás Mountain) near Balatonfüred, offers a beautiful panorama of the surrounding landscape. We were commissioned to construct a building for seasonal residence and recreation that – together with the existing wine cellar –also provides appropriate room for the process of wine making.
The key to the concept of the simple, gable-roofed building is the unique shading and window system of the façade, allowing the house to close in or open up completely when required.
With the special, upright blinds all closed, the building looks like a massive wooden block with a vertical pattern - with open blinds it offers a spectacular view from the interior through the large glass surfaces towards the surrounding landscape. When the house is completely open (all windows and doors open), the indoor spaces of the ground floor merge with the adjacent terraces, as if the building would melt in its surroundings.
The inner structure of the house is organized and defined by a prominent, sculpture-like concrete core incorporating the kitchen counter, the hearth, and the stairs leading to the upper floor.
